Buildapalooza gathering

No, it was not the Englewood Quilting Maniacs, but rather a Colorado QRP Club Buildapalooza gathering. Bob Carver, KBØXT, hosted the gathering in his incredible woodworking shop. Club President Ed Comfort, KCØZLR, jumped out way ahead with his completed QCX transceiver for 20 meters. Club Secretary Dick Schneider, ABØCD, was still sorting parts for his QCX/40. Host Bob inventoried parts for the Oak Hills Research OHR 100A he is building. And Oak Hills Research owner Marshall Emm, N1FN, dispensed good building tips. A good time was had by all. Future sessions will be announced. (No quilts were harmed during the Buildapalooza session.)

Great session in Bob’s fabulous woodworking shop. L-R, Bob, Ed, Marshall, & Dick.

CQC BUILDAPALOOZA building session Thursday evening Jan. 18 – Be there!

Colorado QRP Club BUILDAPALOOZA participants will be meeting Thursday, Jan. 18, at 6:00 p.m. at the QTH of club member Bob Carver, 4097 S Logan St., Englewood CO, to work on the projects, ask questions, get construction tips, and generally talk smart.

Unbuilt Transceiver Kit

Unbuilt Kit – Ready to go!

All are welcome: club members and non members. Bring your BUILDAPALOOZA projects, questions, and ideas. They do not have to be completed, or even started.

BUILDAPALOOZA participants are at various stages in their amateur radio building projects – completed, mid-way, and shipping package still unopened.

The club’s BUILDAPALOOZA project runs through the end of March 2018. Participants will be eligible for prizes, which will be announced in the near future.

The project is designed to encourage hams to build something for their ham shack – a transceiver, transmitter, receiver, or shack accessory.

Please join us Thursday evening. We will be meeting in Bob’s woodworking shop at his home QTH. At that time, we will discuss future gatherings to work together on projects.

COLORADO QRP CLUB BUILDAPALOOZA

Kit Building – Homebrewing – Elmering – Prizes – On Air Event

WHY WHY WHY? — In a world gone mad with high-tech prebuilt gear, The CQC Buildapalooza is an event designed to encourage CQC members to:

  • Build their own gear
  • Place those projects into service
  • Elmer hams to enhance construction skills
  • Increase participation in the hobby

WHEN? — The club sponsored event will take place over the 2017-2018 winter season, beginning November 15, 2017, and ending March 31, 2018.

WHERE? — Everywhere! BUILDAPALOOZA IS LOCAL – The club plans to secure a local building site in the Denver metro area (TBA). BUILDAPALOOZA IS GLOBAL – Most participants will be building their projects at their own benches in their own shacks, anywhere on Planet Earth.

ELMERINGBuilders will be Elmered directly at the Denver area Buildapalooza location and through distanced learning via email and blogs.

RECOMMENDED MAJOR KITS — The club is suggesting two top notch 5-watt QRP transceiver kits: the Oak Hills 100A (1 band of your choice: 80, 40, 30, 20, or 15 meters) and the PFR-3 Trail-ready CW Transceiver (3 bands 40-30-20 meters). Experienced builders of each of these radios will be available for Elmering questions.

DO YOU HAVE TO BUILD THESE KITS? NO NO NO — Buildapalooza participants can build ANY KIT THEY WISH. The club has suggested a few alternative transceiver, transmitter, receiver, and accessory kits. Or, pick one of your own that is not on the club’s list. Scratch built projects are also eligible. The club just wants YOU to build something related to amateur radio and put it into service. More information can be found at WWW.CQCLOWDOWN.ORG and WWW.COLORADOQRPCLUB.ORG.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE? — Colorado QRP Club members with a CQC number, OLD AND NEW. This means any of the 1,000 PLUS hams that currently have a CQC number. NOT A MEMBER? It is easy to join through the club’s website WWW.COLORADOQRPCLUB.ORG. Our dues are QRP as well, $5 for a lifetime membership. JOIN THE COLORADO QRP CLUB.

PRIZES!!! — The Club will be providing prizes awarded by drawing registered participants’ names out of a hat, similar to hamfest door prizes. The club will secure an independent third party to draw names. No additional fees are required for this. Colorado QRP Club officers or Executive Board members ARE NOT eligible to receive prizes.

CQC BUILDAPALOOZA ON AIR EVENT — The club will sponsor an on-air event after the Buildapalooza completion date, sometime in Spring of 2018. Builders can put their rigs or accessories on the air for extra points. This will be a QRP event, 5 watts or less. Stay tuned for more details.
